Project details
The Creative Connected Communities research centre at Falmouth University, Cornwall, invites applications for a three-year full-time Doctoral studentship, fully funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), to undertake research into the design and development of co-present online performance environments that enable connection between audiences, as well as performers.
Streaming of live theatre and music events into local venues is now commonplace, but this streaming is normally mono-directional: performers are not aware of remote audiences. This PhD will develop and test technologies that enable the co-presence of all parties in a streamed event, transforming the experience of performing and consuming work online, and opening new opportunities for interactive streamed content.
Based in the Academy of Music and Theatre Arts at Falmouth University, the successful applicant will work within a team of researchers working in the area of telematic performance. We expect research students to take a full and active role in the Research Centre, including taking part in regular workshops, conferences and seminars. The studentship commences October 2017, and the successful candidate can expect to develop their own dissertation topic within the wider remit of the project.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate at interview:
• imaginative and viable preliminary ideas for research into this subject area
• an appreciation of the nature of PhD study and of both independent and collaborative research
• clear motivation for undertaking PhD study in Falmouth in this subject area
• evidence that you have, or can develop, the skills required to start the proposed research
Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant area and relevant post-graduate degree or industry experience in a relevant area.
